Zacuto EVF

Zacuto has announced the Z-FInder EVF; a 3.2” high resolution monitor that can be used in conjunction with all current Z-Finder models. It will be available in February 2011 (limited supply) and they are estimating the price to be $775.00.


The Z-Finder EVF allows you to operate the DSLR camera with the correct form factor for video with the camera "in-line" to your rod system (the most stable way) and your eye in the Z-Finder EVF.

  • All Z-Finder models snap on and off the EVF and can be used interchangeably between the camera screen or EVF screen
  • Includes mini HDMI cable
The Zacuto Z-Finder EVF monitor resolution is a true 800×480 making the resolution 56% greater than the on-board DSLR camera screens. The Zacuto monitor also has a tighter dot pitch which also improves the quality, making you see a much tighter pixel pattern.

The Z-Finder EVF is currently in prototype stages.  They will be updating customers who are interested along the way with news and videos. They will be taking deposits in December for customers to hold their spot in line; you will be notified via email.

Is it just me, or is that absurdly expensive? You can get perfectly fine full-sized monitors for that price.

... And the monitors will have more than twice the resolution of this little glorified eyecup. I think Zacuto has realized that anything DSLR video related will sell these days no matter what it's priced as, because people love tricking out their cameras and building bigger rigs.

looks like an expensive bulky monitor. so with the z-finder it's more like $1400 plus mounting?

The Redrock microEVF looks much better and less expensive

Have to wait for the reviews to see which is best, but for those on a budget, the microEVF seems like the choice (unless you already have a Zacuto Z-Finder.)

But until they deliver product, we won't know whether either is worth the money.

Sony GV-D200 I've been using a Sony GV-D200 deck to transfer old Video8 and Hi8 tapes. Response: Which iPhone to Get?

In response to my iPhone musings, I got the following reader email which actually sums up a lot of my second and third thoughts too: You might have a point about the fancier camera, but otherwise I would buy the smaller model. Its screen is about the same size as that of my Nexus 4, and I don't feel at all like it limits me with a too-small screen. Should you buy the Sony NEX-FS100 Kit Lens?
