Panasonic AG-HMC70U Unboxing

I'm not a big fan of those unboxing videos and articles that people keep doing, but since I got the thing and I had a camera near by...

Unboxing the Panasonic AG-HMC70U:

Open the box (left), and you find inside another box (right) that looks almost exactly the same; only slightly smaller



Open the top, and you see the software discs, memory card (2 GB) and the side of the camera. The right-hand side compartment holds the power supply.



Lift that tray out, and you see the lens cover and remote (right) and protective packaging:



Take out the next layer, and there's the camera, sitting in a protective baggy:



And here she is, right out of the baggy, with a piece of protective wrapping around the viewfinder arm (the rubber eyecup for the viewfinder isn't attached);



Here's the camera, with all the parts in front, clockwise from left:

* Manual and CD's (one has electronic manual and the other has software).
* Battery
* viewfinder eyecup
* battery for remote
* remote
* shoulder strap
* 2GB memory card
* some kind of magnet thing to put on the AC cord if there's interference
* battery charger
* camera power chord (goes from battery charger to camera)
* lens sheild
* AC power cable (AC to battery charger)

I've read your blog several times now and dig your advice regarding HD shooting and such. Thanks for your un-boxing article.

I'm an editor by trade and am considering buying the Panasonic AG-HMC70U to get some cameraman gigs.

Have you been able to shoot and edit with it yet? When you do, I'd really like to read about it! I work with FCP Suite 2 and I'm wondering what the work flow is like (I hear you have to use the FCP "Log and Transfer" tool? Also is the lack of a focus ring a real bother?

Sony GV-D200 I've been using a Sony GV-D200 deck to transfer old Video8 and Hi8 tapes. Some of these tapes are over twenty years old, and no longer having a Hi8 camcorder that worked I was concerned that if I didn't do something about transferring them to a more modern format soon, I might never be able to. Response: Which iPhone to Get?

In response to my iPhone musings, I got the following reader email which actually sums up a lot of my second and third thoughts too: You might have a point about the fancier camera, but otherwise I would buy the smaller model. Its screen is about the same size as that of my Nexus 4, and I don't feel at all like it limits me with a too-small screen. But I do sometimes stretch to get my thumb the reach to the other corner of the screen. It is plenty big for a phone. A phone is a pocket thing. (Well, in my case it lives an ancient REI soft sunglasses case that I have on my belt.) Ubiquitous, handy, convenient, almost always with me. Small is crucial for all of that.
